Hello and welcome to Year 1!
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Year 1. Our names are Miss Rothacker and Mrs Olsberg and we are the Year 1 teachers. Working closely with us is Mrs Greene teaching Ivrit, Mrs Greenfield teaching Music and Mrs Levitan and Mrs Woolf, the Year One teaching assistants. We are looking forward to an exciting and jam packet year ahead with learning lots about our interesting IPC topics.

In Year 1, the children will continue to have the opportunity to develop into independent learners. They will also be provided with the chance to explore, investigate and experiment through practical learning as well as develop the skills of researching and recording, both inside and out of the classroom.
The children will continue to develop their phonic knowledge through the Read Write Inc scheme and will be reading and writing for different purposes. As well as reading individually, they will have a group guided reading session each week where they will develop their comprehension skills.
They will apply their phonic knowledge to their writing and learn how to structure a sentence with a full stop and capital letter. We are going to work on their handwriting and letter formation this year.
In Maths the children will strive to believe that they are a mathematician. They will have experience of creative and challenging opportunities to develop their mathematic understanding. They will develop their understanding with a practical approach, then a visual representation and lastly the abstract calculation.
We look forward to going on a number of outings this year to consolidate the children's learning.
The children will have two opportunities a week to change their reading book which can be changed once they have finished them both. The children will also have two opportunities a week to visit our fantastic school library and enjoy reading from the wide selection of books. They will be able to borrow a book to take home and either return it or renew it during their next session.
The children will also have two PE lessons a week. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE clothing in school for these sessions.
Please ensure that all items of clothing including shoes, tzitzits and kippot are clearly labelled. This will help your child to become increasingly responsible for their own belongings. It will also help during PE lessons, when items can easily get missed placed!
We look forward to a great year ahead in Year 1!
