Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Chanukah Door Competition

Each class thoroughly enjoyed decorating their classroom door ready for Chanukah.
Nursery used lots of different materials to create their giant Chanukiah for their door. These included: paint, tissue paper, glitter and pasta.
Reception’s Chanukah door was a child led initiative. Through the power of junk modelling the children retold the Chanukah story including King Antiochus’ shiny crown’ and ‘flowing oil’.
Year 1's  Chanukah door was made using cling film and coloured cellophane. It allowed the light to shine through, just like Chanukah! The children loved sticking the cellophane to create the picture.
Year 2's Chanukah door was designed by the children. They wanted to capture their favourite parts of Chanukah, including delicious food. They made this out of different materials, and learned how to make something 'pop out'. They also took pictures of themselves lighting the chanukiah at home.
Year 3’s Chanukah door  was designed by the children.  They made 3D dreidels using card and then created a chanukiah out of the dreidels. Additonally, the children wrote different facts about Chanukah and placed them on the candles.
Year 4's door was linked to their topic of the 'Generation Game'. The children were asked to bring in photos of their grandparents and they wrote about how they celebrate Chanukah. Inside each of the pictures of their grandparents was a picture of them. We also linked it with the mitzvah of publicising the miracle of Chanukah so we made our Chanukah door into a Chanukiah.
Year 5 decided to focus on the idea of presents when creating their Chanukah door. The children created their door independently and tried to make it as interactive as possible. The children included poems and riddles and linked our door to our topic "Full Power" by included fairy lights. The children wrote what they thought was their favourite aspect of Chanukah is and included key vocabulary about Chanukah.
Year 6 worked brilliantly as a team to design and create their Chanukah door. They took inspiration from our school name and logo to produce a Chanukiah in the style of a tree, which represented growth and identity. They chose a giving theme for their door inspired by the work they have been doing with the charity GIFT. The children chose to write about ways they could give (apart from presents) to others over Chanukah.

Well done to all the classes and especially to Year 5 and Year 2 who were the winning classes!
