Hello and welcome to Year 6!
I am Mrs Gishen and I will be your child's class teacher to help with the Recovery Curriculum and deliver the theme of 'Achdut' - togetherness. I will be teaching alongside Ms Pieters who will be teaching Jewish Studies and Mrs Meyer who will be teaching Ivrit.
Year 6 is the final stepping stone before your child heads off to Secondary school and we will be doing lots of things to get them ready. It is also a SATs year; there is a pressure that comes with that and expectations for working in class are high, but we do not focus on it. It remains at the back of our minds as something we are constantly working towards but not as our main focus for the school year. A child who focuses solely on this will not be an effective learner.
In Year 6 especially, we continue to nurture and develop your child’s independence, foster responsibility for their learning and for themselves self. Encouraging them to pack their own school bag, take ownership of completing home learning tasks without reminders from a responsible adult.
One of our topics will be ‘Moving People’. The children will learn that sometimes people choose to move and sometimes this movement is forced upon them. These can have an impact on them emotionally and socially. We will be exploring this through our writing, PSHE, History and Geography.
The children will continue to develop and apply their mathematical knowledge which will include problem solving and algebra. The children will continue to explore a range of quality texts and write for different purposes. There will also be an emphasis on handwriting and presentation, as well as the skill of editing and improving in order to up level writing.
The children will continue to develop their learning through an integrated and creative curriculum and become more resilient and reflective learners. Our classroom will be a vibrant place of learning and independent thinking. Our goal is to develop academically and prepare the children for life beyond year 6.
Year 6 is going to be really exciting, with the residential to Kingswood, GIFT workshops and their end of year play.
