Chinese New Year

At Etz Chaim the children celebrated the Chinese New year in many different ways.

In Nursery they made spring rolls and egg friend rice which they ate with noodles, while they watched a traditional Chinese lion dance on the Interactive Whiteboard.  The children dressed up as a Chinese Dragon and walked around the classroom and the hall.
The children made red and gold playdough and wrote their own Chinese symbols using black paint and feathers. They also learnt how to say hello in Chinese! Ni Hao
In Reception the children role played the Chinese Dragon around the classroom and made red and gold playdough and wrote their own Chinese symbols.
In Year 1 they looked at the Chinese numbers and worked on putting them in order matching them to the English numbers.
In Year 2 during guided reading the children examined a non-fiction text all about Chinese New Year. They explored any words they did not know and discussed items that are symbolic with Chinese New Year.
In Year 3 they made beautifully decorated lanterns for Chinese New Year and learnt why lanterns are special during this time.
In Year 4 the children using their researching skills to research what year it was and what the Chinese traditions are
As Year 5 had been learning about tessellation shapes in maths they used this focus for celebrating the Chinese New Year. As it is the year of the rooster the children cut out designs of this animal to make their interlocking patterns of tessellation.  They used the Chinese traditional colours of red and gold.
