Welcome to our Headline of the week. This will give you a small taster of some of the learning taking place in your child’s class.

We hope you enjoy reading our Headlines each week.

12/04/24 

In English, the children have been writing to entertain. They have spent a lot of time making detailed plans for their exciting stories.

05/04/24 

In D&T, the children learnt about the importance of rice and how it supports nutrition across the world. We used our maths skills to scale a recipe for four people up and down to feed different numbers of people. Then we had a go at cooking rice.

28/03/24 

In geography the children learned about how rivers change their shape through erosion and deposition. They demonstrated this concept using the sand pit in the playground and water.

22/03/24 

In the DT the children explored some exotic ingredients and where they have come from. This included mangos, ginger and pak choi.

15/03/24 

The children research the course of a river and then they created playdough models of the river course and labelled the features.

08/03/24 

The children took on the challenge to classify the animals using the linnean system to help the zoo know where to place the animals.

In the final lesson about World War 2, the children sequenced events on a timeline and added further information about some of the events. Then they thought about how key events have shaped the world we live in.

In History, the children learnt about how women’s roles changed during World War 2. They used propaganda posters to research the jobs that women did and designed their own posters.

As part of our PSHE learning, the children have been considering their Mental wellbeing and online safety. The children have all created slogans about being kind to each other online.

The children created their own biographies of Charles Darwin. They designed them as mini Charles Darwin figures and researched his life, his work and found out about his scientific ideas and research.  These will be displayed in the classroom.

In Art we have been looking carefully at birds. We started off our lesson this week with a barrier activity where one person described a bird to a partner and they tried to draw it. Some descriptions were excellent! Following this we did some close observational drawings of birds.

The children enjoyed a trip to The Benjamin Franklin House. Here they consolidated their knowledge of electricity and theories of Benjamin Franklin. They also had the opportunity to learn and experience the Georgian Era.

The children have looked at the scientific concept of inheritance. They were able to look at their own families and others in the class and discuss from observation what has been inherited from their parents and grandparents.

In English we have been writing balanced discussion texts based on our book “How to Live Forever”. The children thought about what a conclusion is for before writing the conclusions to their texts.

08/12/23 

In History, we have been learning about the beliefs and rituals of people in the time of the Shang Dynasty. The children found different ways to present their learning and created powerpoints and posters.

In Science we have been learning about reflection. The children have created their own periscopes out of cereal boxes.

24/11/23 

The class had a visit from Mr Bloom, a human rights lawyer this week. He spoke to the class about British Values, his role and Windrush. Mr Bloom has represented clients who have come to the UK during Windrush and shared some of his experiences. The children were fascinated to ask him questions about law, human rights and Windrush.

17/11/23  

Year 6 sorted our Food Bank Aid donations with our visitors from Kisharon Langdon. They also made Chanukah cards which will be sent to Jewish Care homes.

The Education Co-ordinator from Kisharon Langdon ran a workshop with Year 6 about visible and invisible disabilities. The children asked interesting and thoughtful questions.

This week we have continued writing our descriptive pieces about our Kingswood experiences.

20/10/23  

Following our residential, we started planning descriptive writing based on one of our experiences. We thought about figurative language we could use and how to include show-not-tell.

13/10/23 

During bike to school week, the children carried out an investigation to see how exercise effects heart rate. They used their bike and scooter time to devise an experiment to carry out to investigate the effects and then conduct the experiment. We learnt how to check our pulse and counted the amount of times we could feel it.

The children enjoyed hosting Courtlands School earlier on in the week. They enjoyed creating presentations to explain Jewish customs around the Tishrei festivals.

The children enjoyed creating Backwards Poems based on Bill Billson’s Poem Refugee. They looked at how to perform it in pairs using voice, body language, actions and tone.

22/09/23  

The children enjoyed making themselves into circuits! As part of our Science lesson about electricity we made ourselves into circuits and then drew circuit diagrams into our books using the correct symbols.

15/09/23  

In Maths, we have been consolidating place value in 7 and 8 digit numbers. We made different 7 and 8 digit numbers using counters on place-value grids and practised reading the numbers we made. Then we used the place value grids to solve different problems.

In Maths, we have been learning about equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

In Jewish Studies, the children have been learning about Pesach and preparing for their seder.

The children have worked hard on decimals this week. This included some tricky problem solving challenges to test their fluency and understanding.

22/03/24 

Rabbi Rose came in to talk about the Rabbi Sacks Legacy Trust and Purim. The children learnt about Rabbi Sacks - he was proud to be a Jew and wasn’t afraid to talk about what he thought and believed, he was open, he was a leader, he was caring, he wrote over 40 books. The children watched a video about Rabbi Sacks - they saw pictures of him meeting the Queen, King Charles, the pope and other world leaders. Rabbi Rose explained that Rabbi Sacks said that being joyful is the best way to fight against being scared. That is what Purim is all about. Having faith in the happy ending.

The children learnt about how to spot safe websites. They created posters for the school to inform all the pupils of how to spot them and stay safe.

The children enjoyed their second Yehudi activity with their madrichim.

The children planned and staged formal debates on human intervention in genetic modification.

In English, we have started reading “Floodlands”. We discussed the setting and thought about the main concepts behind the plot.

To put Europe into context whilst studying World War 2, the children explored Maponimoes in groups. They built the map of Europe, identifying the bordering countries and those involved in World War 2.

02/02/24 

The children took part in a half day workshop in school entitled Leo's Journey. They followed the story of Leo, a 10 year old Jewish boy from Nazi Germany in 1938 to safety in England via the Kindertransport. We explored what life may have been like for a Jewish child refugee at this time through watching video excerpts from Leo’s fictitious diary and picking up and examining props based on objects from the time.

As part of our WW2 learning, the children heard from Mr and Mrs Fraser about RAF planes. The children were able to engage and put context to their WW2 learning.

19/01/24 

The children enjoyed an afternoon at the Yehudi launch at JFS this week. Half of the class came second in the competition so far! Which is very exciting. This involved completing tasks including breaking codes and solving puzzles to complete an escape room. Our children completed these in just over 20 minutes. We look forward to welcoming the organisation once a month to continue the learning.

In computing the children have started to animate characters for a spooky story using code on Scratch.

In Science, we have been investigating coloured light filters and the effect they have when we look through them at different coloured objects.

The children made beautiful chanukiot using natural materials. They thought carefully about how to arrange the materials to look attractive whilst ensuring that their chanukiah is kosher. They also learnt how to use a glue gun safely.

The children have continued learning about the Shang Dynasty. They created information videos to explain what they had learnt.

24/11/23 

In History we are learning about the Shang Dynasty. We looked at pictures of different people in the society and thought about who they were, what they were doing and their place in the social hierarchy. Then we tried putting them in order of importance. Finally, we researched our group and fed back to the rest of the class.

17/11/23 

We visited Fairway School and participated in an immersive Diwali experience. The children heard the story of Rama and Sita and learnt an Indian dance. They also had the opportunity to explore some Hindu artefacts and make diya lamps.

We have been practising the formal method for long division and using this to solve problems, thinking carefully about the remainders.

We concluded our work investigating circuits. We looked at the effect of changing one variable on the brightness of a bulb.

In maths, we have been investigating square and cube numbers.

The children have been learning about Frida Khalo in art this half term. They have looked at her portraits and created clay monkeys.

06/10/23 

The children have been taking part in a local area study of Mill Hill. The enjoyed going to different areas of Mill Hill to take part in field work where they investigated their group’s chosen area of investigation in more detail. This included sketching parts of Mill Hill, collecting samples of leaves and doing rubbings of nature with crayons.

The children have worked in groups to plan and take part in an experiment to test how voltage affects the brightness of a bulb. We focused on writing prediction and then reflecting on our results to see whether we were right. The children learnt about fair tests and how we can control an environment so only one thing changes

The children enjoyed leadership training to prepare them for their roles as sports leaders and circle group meeting leaders. One of our values is community and we used this session to prepare our Year 6 children to help lead our community this year.

15/09/23  

The children have started to read Kensuke’s Kingdom. We have explored his emotions from falling overboard. The children have considered their word choices and have learnt how to utilise a thesaurus for better vocabulary options.
