Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Hello and Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1

Our names are Miss Roberts and Mrs Talisman and we are looking forward to teaching your children in Year 1. Our wonderful teaching assistants Miss Katz and Miss Raja will support the children.

This academic year is going to be an incredible year for the whole school community. We are looking forward to celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Etz Chaim with lots of activities and events.

The children will be beginning Key Stage One and we are excited that with fewer restrictions, the whole school are able to be a community again. We know that the children will need to adapt to many things including: whole school assemblies together; break times with full use of our wonderful playground; working together with children from other classes; as well as all of the new routines they will have in Year 1. We will be taking things slowly over the first few weeks to get the children into these new routines and ways of working.

We are starting the term with the topic ‘How Are You?’ during which we will be looking at all of the different ways to stay healthy. Over the rest of the summer holidays, we would like the children to look out for all of the healthy foods available and the exercises they can complete.

The children will continue to develop their phonic knowledge through the Read Write Inc scheme and will be reading and writing for a range of purposes. The children will gain first-hand experiences to support them with their writing including through drama, role-play and small-world play. They will be developing their mathematical skills in number and calculations, problem solving, shape and measuring. The children will be given lots of hands on, practical opportunities to consolidate as well as develop their learning. They will be gaining access to Mathletics and Magic Spell to help improve their learning even further.

Mrs Talisman is looking forward to teaching your child Jewish Studies this year. We will be learning all about the Chaggim and Jewish living topics. We will also be working through the Aleph Champ Scheme.

We will continue to use a blended learning approach, which includes the use of SeeSaw to set activities and record explanation videos, and record the children’s ideas and responses using photographs, videos, text and voice clips.

Your role as parents is also invaluable, learning is key not only in school but in the home as well.  We aim to create strong links between the home and school environment, and to do this the children will need your support with regards to their learning.  We believe that good communication between home and school is central to your child’s learning. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact us via the home-school liaison books.

The children will start receiving Home Learning in Year 1. They will also visit the School Library each week where they can borrow books and develop a love of reading.
