Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Hello and welcome to Year 2!

Year 2

My name is Miss Hyman and I am very excited to be your child’s class teacher for this academic year. The children will also have the pleasure of having Rabbi Herman as their Jewish Studies teacher, and Miss Joseph as their teaching assistant.

I have just completed my three-year teaching degree at the University of Hertfordshire and I am looking forward to teaching year 2 as my first class. Whilst doing my degree I have had placements at numerous schools both in mainstream and special educational need provisions where my love for working with children has evolved.

This year is going to be an incredible year for the whole school community. We are looking forward to celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Etz Chaim with lots of activities and events.

We are also excited that with fewer restrictions, the whole school are able to be a community again and have assemblies together as well as enjoying break times with full use of our wonderful playground.

As the children move from Year 1 to Year 2, they will continue to develop their independence in a safe and challenging environment. Our topic for the first half term is ‘How are you?’ where they will be exploring healthy living, both emotionally and physically. The children will explore the book ‘Beegu’ which links to the theme of emotional wellbeing. It would be great to find out what your child already knows about keeping healthy and the different emotions related to feelings. This will link to our topic lessons. We will be reading and writing for different purposes throughout the year. The children will continue to develop their phonics knowledge through the Read Write Inc scheme and encouraging children to become confident at spelling, building upon strategies previously taught. The children will gain first-hand experiences to support them with their writing including role-play and drama as well as having visitors and outings.

Please continue to read with your child and talk about their books over the summer to maintain their love for reading.

In Mathematics we will continue to look at calculations as well as shape and measuring. We hope to develop children’s fluency and confidence when reasoning and problem solving. In addition, the children will be given lots of hands on, practical opportunities to consolidate as well as develop their learning and gain an understanding of the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ in order to develop a mastery in mathematics.

In Jewish Studies we will be continuing to develop Hebrew reading skills using Aleph Champ Scheme and will be learning to write in Hebrew script. We will also be learning about Chaggim and songs used around them.

We will continue to use a blended learning approach, which includes the use of SeeSaw to set activities and record explanation videos, and record the children’s ideas and responses using photographs, videos, text and voice clips.

Our partnership with you plays a crucial part in your child’s education. we would therefore kindly ask you to use the Home Liaison Book if you would like to ask any questions, raise any concerns, or keep in touch.
