Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Year 6

Post SATS, the children were busy working on their school production based on The Wizard of Oz, called The Great Teacher of Etz. The children were submersed in creating the production where they learnt their lines, choreographed dances, learnt the music and the art of performance. The children created their own props, displays and scenery for the stage. The children poured their heart and soul for what has been a very successful production.

In Maths, the children had a lot of opportunities for practical investigations. This included finding the patterns and ratios around us, in the playground and wherever they can see a pattern or relationship with numbers. The children also enjoyed their art based scale factor challenge of enlarging a chocolate bar wrapper by 5. They were able to investigate how to enlarge their shape and ensure it was all in the new proportion.

The children considered current events and participated in the Minsitry of Diaspora Affairs project of sending messages of support to Ukraine. This involved creating messages alongside schools all over the world to give to Jewish Ukrainian children.

During the week of Remembrance Day, the children took part in an in-depth study of Flander's Fields and created their own response poems.

During the topic of Moving People, the children had the opportunity to consider what it is like to move home and the reasons people leave their countries. They heard from an Asylum Seeker who had travelled on foot from Syria to the UK. The children explored his journey through the use of google maps and heard about all the different countries they went through in order to come to the UK.

The children enjoyed their residential trip this half term. The experience allowed the children to engage in  a variety of different activities outside of their comfort zones. Individually, the trip allowed the children to hone in on their resilience, courage and test their own boundaries. As a class, the children were able to focus on their team work, communication and ability to listen to one another.

The children enjoyed participating in a variety of Science investigations this term. This included looking at materials and light. The children explored the ideas of light through a variety of independent group experiments. The children had to plan their investigation, write the reports and carry out the work independently. They reflected nicely on their work and what they are able to learn from the results.

The class created their own 'Ban The Bully' campaigns for friendship week.

Year 6 learnt about the counties of the UK, identifying and labelling them. They then took part in a comparison study of two counties.

The children explored the topic Moving People. They learnt about a variety of reasons people move and learnt about refugees and Asylum Seekers. The children had the opportunity to hear from a Syrian Refugee who retold their story and journey of how they came to the UK. This was a powerful experience, which brought the learning to life and made it more tangible for the children.

The children enjoyed preparing for Purim and creating their own Fairground style poem posters to decorate the hall. They created them in the style of Fred Fowle, a famous Fairground artist. Year 6 studied his work and were able to use his techniques, styles and colours to create their beautiful pieces of artwork. The children then had the excitement of preparing for Passover. They created their own printed Matzah covers based on Andy Warhol and his Pop Art colour themes. The children thought critically about the Seder and were able to research and investigate their own questions based on their portion of the seder. This provoked interesting discussions around the symbolism and meaning to our Seder order.

The children enjoyed an exciting book week where they had the opportunity to do paired reading with Year 2.  In book week, they participated in writing their own poems based on the work of Josh Seigal. They wrote some beautiful poetry about 'When I close my eyes'. Their imaginative pieces were based on what happens in the classroom and where the imaginations take them. The children also looked at the book Floodland and wrote their own versions of how they believed Norwich became flooded. Their dystopian stories were fascinating to read.

The children created sculptures of the person next to them using clay techniques to create their identifiable facial features.

The children learnt about Place Value in Maths. They are now able to compare, order and understand the value of numbers up to 10 million. The children learnt to reason with large numbers in a variety of ways. This included the use of practical resources such as cards, dice and dienes as well as looking at reasoning and problem solving around the place value objectives.

The children worked hard to understand Scratch and experiment with its features. This is one of the images the children made on Scratch. They then went on to code their own Scratch maze.
