Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Year 3

The children have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Heads Up this year. They were given the chance to develop their skills in working together and problem solving. They had to make a bridge out of the resources that were given that could hold various different objects. The children found this really challenging but were excellent at working together!

In the first half of the Summer term, the children learnt about perimeter of 2D shapes. They began to measure the perimeter using the blocks and then used rulers.

In the second part of the Spring term, as part of our learning about Ancient Egypt, the children learnt about the process of mummification. They learnt what happened to the Egyptian pharaohs after they died. They then got the chance to mummify an apple, following the steps that the Egyptians used.

At the beginning of the Spring term, the children created a rainforest in the classroom. They looked at the different layers of the rainforest and created different objects that might be found in that layer using the resources on their tables.

Autumn 2 our topic was Significant People. To start this, the children explored different significant people around the world and recorded what they already knew and what they wanted to ask them.

To begin the Autumn term, Year 3 had fun looking at how they are all connected to one another. They used a roll of string to pass to someone that they had something similar or in common with. It made a spider’s web of connections.

The children have had great fun this term learning the ukulele. They first learnt how to hold the instrument and then were able to play a variety of different tunes and games using the ukulele.

The children enjoyed learning about organs in the human body. They researched their purpose, how they work and why we have them in our body. They drew around their bodies and pinpointed where you would find this organ.

The children began their new topic by writing what fitness and health meant to them. The children gave some examples of how they thought we could stay fit and healthy. They also wrote what they thought someone who was ‘unfit’ would look like.

Year 3 had an excellent time learning about beat, pulse and rhythm in music sessions this term. They were able to practise this on the percussion instruments.

Year 3 took their knowledge about symmetry in Maths and applied it to movements in PE. They had to create still positions that were symmetrical and also travel through spaces and equipment in a symmetrical way.

The children studied the book Egyptian Cinderella. They explored the book and the story in many different ways. They thought about how Cinderella might have felt throughout the book. They took turns to hot seat in the role of her and ask questions about her feelings at different points in the story.

The children enjoyed planning and creating, in teams, a container for an egg that was dropped at a height in the playground. They collected materials and competed in two rounds of challenges and the winning team was announced in Assembly.

As part of their learning for the rainforests, Year 3 visited Kew Gardens where they learnt about different products from the rainforest and were able to see the different plants.

In PE, the children learnt about ‘mirroring’ and ‘matching’ movements. They were then given the opportunity to practise these movements in pairs.

The children were given the chance to cross the road as part of Road Safety Week and learn the rules of the road.

The children have enjoyed PE this term. They linked their learning about fitness and health to take part in different races and fitness circuits. They enjoyed taking part in a mini sports day with Year 4 where they had to use their agility skills.

The children used their knowledge from the story of Egyptian Cinderella and their dance skills to freeze frame in the role of Rodophis (Cinderella). They thought about how she might have felt and what sorts of activities she would be doing and froze in these positions. The children then got a chance to explain what they liked about other groups performance.

Year 3 have been lucky enough to take part in a programme called Heads Up. It involves discussing issues to do with friendship, bullying and emotions. One of the activities was to dance around the room in a particular emotion.

The children enjoyed making and painting their chanukiahs for Chanukah.

The children celebrated receiving their chumashim with a ceremony and performance in school and at Mill Hill shul.

To celebrate National Poetry Day, Year 3 looked at Space poems. They read them aloud in groups and performed them to the rest of the class. They used actions, loud voices and expression to make them exciting to listen to and watch!

As part of Chocolate Maths week, the children got a chance in groups to weigh and order chocolate and investigate which ones were heavier or lighter than others. They used their estimation skills first and then their abilities to read a scale.
