Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

Year 5's Trip to The Jewish News

To enhance our learning on writing newspaper articles as part of our topic, ‘In the News’, they went to The Jewish News office to find out all about it.

Thanks to all the staff there they had the most informative and wonderful day. The children spent time with different staff members finding out about their role in putting together the weekly editions of the Jewish News.

They learnt how the pages are designed, photographs are chosen and edited, how the layout on the pages is planned and set, how the sports pages are put together and who interviews famous politicians to find out updates and stories from around the world.

The children really enjoyed finding out how much income is made from advertising and what that money is used for. They looked at the plan for the adverts and the final ones going to print. One of the children did a grand job selling a full page advert on the phone to a party planner client!

Jack, web director, showed the children how The Jewish News site works and how he uploads stories , which the children had fun trying it out.

A while back the class designed a Seder plate to represent our school. It made it to the front page of The Jewish News supplement! They had a real surprise when at the end of our trip The Jewish News presented us with a beautiful glass Seder plate made from our design!
