Poppy Day Celebrations

Our learning about Poppies and Remembrance Day started with a whole school assembly where we watched this video and learnt why people wear poppies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv_ub7Be7oA

Across the school the children were involved with a variety of activities and learning opportunities:

In Nursery the children used their creative skills to reproduce poppies. They really enjoyed working together to do this.

Reception made tissue paper poppies and played with small toy soldiers in the small world tray. The children loved making pictures of poppies with red, green and black buttons on mirrors which also developed their fine motor skills.

Year 1 wrote acrostic poems for Remembrance Day, threaded poppies with red laces and created repeating patterns in the style of Andy Warhol using poppies.

Year 2 created their own poppies by punching holes and threading red wool.  They then wrote why poppies are significant.

Year 3 had an informative session on Poppy Day. They discussed and watched a video on the relevance of the poppy. The children then wrote about Poppy Day on the template of a poppy. They developed their fine motor skills by using the tweezers to stick red tissue paper for decoration.

Year 4 discussed the fact that, although not necessarily 'famous' individually, all of the soldiers who served in the armed forces truly ‘made a difference'. The children discussed the idea that everyone can do things in their own lives which are significant and for the benefit of the world we live in. The children coloured paper poppies and wrote on the petals their own suggestions as to how they could play their part.

Year 5 created their own poppy designs to symbolise the soldier’s bravery during the war. The children then annotated their designs to help them understand the symbolism within.

Year 6 read a passage informing them all about Remembrance Sunday and then answered questions on the text.
