Science Week 2017

The children were collected from the playground at the beginning of Science Week by some real scientists! They were in fact the teachers wearing lab coats ready for a fun-filled week of Science…

In Nursery the children spent the week learning about their bodies and healthy eating. They had a special visit from Dr Bowman who talked to them about eating healthily and the children enjoyed creating some lovely healthy- eating meals. The class sorted healthy and un-healthy foods, and talked about what they like to eat. They also had an explosive afternoon making volcanoes! The children explored the different materials needed to make a volcano… and they did not like the smell of the vinegar!

Reception listened to a talk on healthy eating from parent Mrs Bowman and  designed healthy eating plates.
They also learnt about the importance of a balanced diet and cut and sticked foods which they should a little bit of and a lot of.
Reception learnt about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and how they can incorporate them into their diet. They made fruit skewers. They did vegetable printing and made vegetable potato heads.

In Year 1 the children spent the week learning about their bodies in order to create their own poem relating to the human body.  They also enjoyed creating a moving body with using split pins.

In Year 2, the children had a race to label their body parts, learnt new names for parts of their body and what they do. They carried out an investigation to find out what material would make the best ear defenders to protect our ears from loud noises. They had an interesting workshop with Hands on Science where we learnt all about healthy eating. They were amazed at how much sugar is in coca cola and how a pringle could burn due to how much energy it contained. Mrs Zekaria kindly came into tell us all about being an optician and we learnt lots of fascinating facts about eyes!

Year 3 participated in a range of workshops for Science Week. They're most memorable activity was investigating how much sugar is in our favourite foods, like pringles and coca cola!

Year 4 enjoyed their workshop with Dr Kaye, finding out all about the function of the heart. They also carried out an investigation about lung capacity, calculating their own lung capacity using a milk bottle and water. They linked this to their learning about Ancient Egypt, thinking about the process of mummification and what happens to the organs.

In Year 5 the topic for Science Week was the Heart and Circulation. Having discussed the important role of the heart the children made models of it out of blue and red play doh, made for them by the Nursery! The children were lucky enough to have a visit from Dr Kaye, a GP, who explained the roles and functions of the main organs and demonstrated the way they work. She also brought in some real organs for the children to look at! The children labelled pictures of the heart and researched information on the circulatory system. They enjoyed PE which was linked to Keeping Healthy and what happens to ther heart beat and circulation when exercising. The children took their resting pulse and again after vigorous exercise and compared the results. They linked healthy eating with the study of a famous artist, Dan Cretu, who makes art out of food. The children will be using healthy fruit and vegetables to depict scenes of the Purim story!
